Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. Announces Formation of Control State Operation in Alabama
Agreement Expands Southern’s Control State Coverage to 15 States
MIAMI - October 5, 2006 - In a strategic move whose aim is to further broaden its Control State representation in the United States, Wayne E. Chaplin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., Miami, Florida, the country’s largest wine and spirits distributor with operations in 27 states, announced the formation of Southern Wine & Spirits of Alabama, which brings to 15 the number of Control State markets in which Southern is present.
Mr. Chaplin said, “We continue to be focused to on building our Control State Group’s national coverage. Given our latest move into Alabama, all told, our Control State operations account for 15 out of a total of 19 Control jurisdictions in the United States. Cumulatively, our 15 Control jurisdiction coverage totals about 72 percent of all Control jurisdictions in 2005.” [Data Source: Adams Advance Handbook-2006]
Mr. Chaplin added, “Just as we conduct business in our other markets, we count on bringing our expertise and leadership in the establishment and ongoing development of our Alabama division.”
Brad Vassar, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., said, “Under the leadership of led by Peter Hickey, Executive Vice President, General Manager-Control States Group of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, together with his dedicated Control State Group, will work closely with Keith Treadwell, Vice President, General Manager-Control States Group for Alabama as well as our existing Mississippi operation on all appropriate state liquor control board issues, national initiatives, and supplier and brand programs and strategies as well as implement best practices in all our control state markets.”
Mr. Hickey said, “All of us at the Control State Group at Southern Wine & Spirits of America, are determined to carry on in building the industry’s very finest coast-to-coast team of experienced Control State executives. Thanks to our collective experience, we all know what is involved to successfully focus on our suppliers’ goals as well as effectively and efficiently provide the very best service to all the appropriate Control State entities in which we are privileged to operate.” He added, “Keith will manage both the Alabama as well as our Company’s existing Mississippi operation that Southern commenced earlier this year. In the Mississippi division, Keith will be working closely with David Koenig, who concentrates on the fine wine business and non-alcoholic beverage business, among other responsibilities.” Mr. Hickey also noted that Mr. Treadwell will report to Steven G. Dick, Vice President, General Sales Manager – Control States Division of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc.; Mr. Dick also serves as Vice President, General Manager of Southern Wine & Spirits Pennsylvania.
According to Mr. Vassar, “Keith has extensive experience in the both the broker and supplier sides of the business. He has been in the industry for 21 years. Formerly, he had been with Seagram for 13 years and the last four years with Allied Domecq managing the Alabama and Mississippi markets.”
This latest announcement follows news earlier this year that in partnership with Alaska Distributors Co. of Seattle Washington, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. had formed SouthernWine/Spirits West, whose operations cover the Control State markets of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming.
