Florida International University Confers Honorary Degree of Doctor of Public Service on Harvey R. Chaplin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc.

MIAMI - May 28, 2008 – Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., the Nation’s Leading Wine and Spirits Distributor and Control States Broker with a tradition of service excellence since 1968 and proud to be celebrating its 40th anniversary, announced that Harvey R. Chaplin, Chairman and Chief Executive Office of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. was awarded an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Public Service, by Florida International University (FIU) of Miami. In addition to Mr. Chaplin’s associates and family, the special ceremony was attended by FIU’s Board of Trustees, President Dr. Modesto Maidique, FIU faculty as well as the 2008 graduating class on April 28, 2008.

In conferring this Honorary Degree in recognition of Mr. Chaplin and Southern Wine & Spirits of America’s longstanding philanthropic activities, the FIU Citation stated: “Harvey Chaplin, we honor and salute you as a remarkably successful businessman and dedicated supporter of education, the arts and health care. As the chairman and CEO of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., you have a long history of support for FIU, including your founding contribution to the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center and The Harvey R. Chaplin Eminent Chair of Beverage Management Studies within the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Your commitment to higher education is best exemplified by the successful partnership between your company and the university in the production of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, which provides essential scholarship funds for students of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.”

At the ceremony, David Parker, Chair of the FIU Board of Trustees, further noted that the FIU Citation declared: “Your support of many international, national and local charities, including Mt. Sinai Medical Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital, among others, has benefited countless individuals. In recognition of your leadership and immeasurable contributions to the community, and by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Florida International University Board of Trustees, I hereby confer upon you the Doctor of Public Service degree, honoris causa, and welcome you into the company of FIU alumni.”

In accepting the Doctor of Public Service honor from FIU, Mr. Chaplin said, “I would like to thank Mitch Maidique, President of FIU and my friend, Joe West, Dean of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Distinguished Faculty & Guests, All the Parents of This Year’s FIU Graduates, all the 2008 graduating students, members of the Miami Community Joining us today, and Last, But Not Least My Family, Friends and Associates who are here with me today. In accepting this Honorary Degree in Public Service from Florida International University, I would like you all to know How Personally Touched and Deeply Honored I am by this Recognition from the Board of Trustees of FIU.”

In addressing FIU’s 2008 graduating class directly, Mr. Chaplin added: “The Public Service Degree that I am getting implies that I have given back to the community, and one of my credos is now and forever to give to those that I can help. I give to colleges, to hospitals, to religious organizations, etc. and I would hope that when you make it you would do the same thing. So, it goes without saying that at Southern Wine & Spirits of America supporting education for our employees as well as our corporate contributions to the communities where we are present has always been a vitally important part of our overall giving. Therefore, the message to you who are graduating today is that you are starting the rest of your lives now. You have the talent and the knowledge you have learned here at FIU, and now it is up to you to expand your lives, dream of new things that will be used in America or the world you have the ability and credentials, just keep thinking like they did with Google, facebook.com, blogs and such. I wish you good luck in all your endeavors. And with that said and this honorary degree that you have given me, I can truly say I now have a college degree – just like you all. Thank you again for this great honor.
