Southern Wine & Spirits of America Inc., and it’s Employees Assist Haiti Earthquake Victims

Miami, FL ( March 29, 2010 )
To support the earthquake victims of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., along with thousands of its employees from its 29 markets of operation, initiated a company-wide Haiti relief program. The effort raised a quarter of a million dollars for the residents of the island nation so heavily impacted by the devastating earthquake of January 12th.

It should be noted that Southern’s response to the Haiti quake began immediately with a rapid response effort just three days after the quake, Southern opened its warehouses in South Florida and worked with Spirit Airlines to airlift 50,000 bottles of drinking water from Miami.

This bottled water effort was the kick-off to a month-long, grass-roots fund raising drive across Southern. "We wanted to do our part—both immediately with the water and in a sustained manner with relieffunds—to help those most critically affected by the earthquake,” stated Southern’s President & Chief Operating Officer, Wayne E. Chaplin.

In a coordinated drive across Southern’s 29 markets of operation and its headquarters in Miami, Southern employees made individual donations to the earthquake relief effort. Noting the tremendous number of Southern employee participants and the significant relief dollars that poured in voluntarily, Mr. Chaplin said, “I am extremely proud that our team members from around the country—from Miami to Maui—responded to this tragic event so quickly and so generously.”

All told, Southern’s Haiti fundraising program reached $250,000—which will be channeled through the American red Cross. Add in the donation of drinking water, and the total Southern Haiti relief effort reaches approximately $300,000.

"It is personally rewarding to recognize individually over 1,500 of our employees who helped contribute to the success of our company’s Haiti relief matching program. We are grateful to be able to provide some measure of support for our Haitian neighbors as they rebuild their communities and lives," concluded Southern’s Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, Lee F. Hager.
