Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. (Southern), the country’s leading wine and spirits distributor, today announced that Mel Velez has recently been appointed Vice President, Demand Planning and Logistics. Mel’s addition to Southern’s already industry leading Supply Chain Management team will further enhance Southern’s ability to deliver excellence in service to our divisional and retail customers, as well as to continue to enhance and expand our partnerships with our suppliers across the Southern enterprise.

Mr. Velez has 22 years of experience in a variety of leadership roles across various industries. Mel began his career in 1991 working as General Manager for AT&T Global Business Systems. Most recently, he worked at Citrix Systems, Inc. as Group Director of Global Procurement and Accounts Payable. While working at Citrix, Mel’s team was able to generate sustainable and meaningful savings and effectiveness.

Commenting on the appointment, Bobby Burg, Senior Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer said, “We have appointed Mel to our team as he brings many years of experience in procurement and is a demonstrated leader. For example, while at Tellabs, his team attained “Best in Class” status in six out of seven Supply Chain/Customer Service categories, while overseeing the Latin American Supply Chain business.”

Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Velez stated, “I’m very excited and fortunate to be given this opportunity and look forward to working closely with our Supplier Partners and our Division Leadership to add greater value to the Supply Chain for the benefit of all.”
Mr. Velez has earned a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and a Master’s degree from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He will report to Phil Morsing, Vice President Supply Chain Operations, effective immediately.
