Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. and Its Employees Nationwide Collect $372,000 in Combined Donations for Gulf States Corporate Relief Drive in Wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
American Red Cross to Receive Donations Targeted for Storm Victims and Families
Miami, Oct. 12 -- Participating in growing national public and private relief efforts to aid the victims, families and communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., the country's largest wine and spirits distributor, today announced that the Company, together with its more than 10,000 employees in 19 states, has collected and donated a combined $372,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Harvey R. Chaplin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., and Wayne E. Chaplin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., wrote in a letter addressed to the American Red Cross: "We challenged our 10,000 employees working in 19 states across the country to contribute to the fund-raising efforts of the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to aid the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our challenge was that, for every dollar raised by our employees, the company, through its private charitable foundation, would match the contribution. At this time, we are happy to inform you that our employees contributed an incredible $186,000. Accordingly, we are enclosing a check from the SWS Charitable Foundation in the amount of $372,000. This donation is being made on behalf of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., and its valued employees."
In a thank-you letter to all the Company's employees notifying them of the fund-raising efforts and results, Harvey and Wayne Chaplin wrote: "Approximately two weeks ago, we challenged you to make a difference in the lives of those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Simply stated, your generosity and compassion were overwhelming. As we have now completed our fund-raising drive, it is with sincere pride for all our employees that we announce that you have raised an incredible $186,000. Therefore, it is with our sincere gratitude for a job well done that we will donate a combined $372,000."

Concluding their thank-you message to Southern employees, Harvey and Wayne Chaplin wrote: "The response by each and every one of our employees at a time of need is truly symbolic of the spirit that is the lifeblood of our company, Southern Wine & Spirits, as we have always prided ourselves on being one big family. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a valiant effort in lending a helping hand to those in need."
