3. Columbia Urban League
This event provides resources that enable the Columbia Urban league in fulfilling its mission of empowering the disadvantaged in improving their quality of life. As a strong advocate and catalyst for improving the quality of life for all, the Columbia Urban League was the recipient of the National Urban League’s 2010 Whitney M. Young Jr. Leadership Award for Advancing Racial Equality. This award was presented during the National Urban League Centennial Conference in Washington, D.C.

5. Seagram’s Gin Pursuit of Excellence Program

The program is a job creating [and] mentoring program for young African American males. It’s a program that’s designed to provide some important life skills in terms in area of résumé writing, how to dress, how to interview [and] how to get ready for that next step, whatever that next step will be,” says Cherie off the Seagram’s Gin Pursuit of Excellence Institute. “The whole objective is to give back to the community that we serve.
6. Central Carolina Community Foundation
Annual Central Carolina Community Foundation
The purpose of the Central Carolina Food and Wine Festival is to showcase local gourmet food purveyors and domestic and international wineries while raising money for a good cause. Proceeds from all events support efforts of Central Carolina Community Foundation to award grants to nonprofit organizations in the Midlands. In 16 years the event has raised over $735,000 in support of the Foundation’s mission.
7. Talented Tenth Weekend
City of Columbia
The Talented Tenth Weekend will be a unique opportunity for young African-American Professionals to network with established business and civic leaders all from across Columbia and the Southeastern United States.
The weekend’s activities will assist young professionals in the development of their career objectives and in developing the networking contacts and skills that they need to succeed. The conference will be an opportunity for young professionals to learn more about Columbia’s history, become more engaged in Columbia’s civic life and to enjoy wonderful social activities across the region.
“I firmly believe that Columbia can be the most talented, educated, and entrepreneurial city in the Southeast if not America. Unfortunately, too often our community’s most promising rising stars believe they must relocate to Charlotte, Atlanta, or Washington D.C. because we cannot provide them with the opportunities they need to thrive. We cannot afford to let the next generation of trailblazers slip away from Columbia, SC. We have to show them that they can live up to their God-given potential right here in our city.
8. Harvest Hope Food Bank
Annual Food Drive to assist with the Harvest Hope Food Bank that provides assistance to thousands of hungry people in our service area by distributing food and related products to more than 400 non-profit member agencies in 20 counties of central South Carolina.
9. Families Helping Families
Sponsor Families in need. Annually SWS employees adopt families and are paired with the size and number of families they wish to adopt and provided with a gift wish list. Gifts are collected and dropped off at the Families Helping Families distribution center. From there, the families will collect the gifts in need.
Fighting against domestic violence on battered women and their children who seek shelter to escape the abuse in their lives and community.
